Life should be more than just “ok” - Therapy can help

As a tradie, an apprentice or a professional, you know how stressful it is trying to balance working safely yet efficiently, running a business, being a good husband and dad AND a good mate, and still find time to enjoy yourself! Men commonly visit therapy for: anger management and emotional explosions, anxiety or an anxiety disorder, alcohol and substance use, relationship problems with work colleagues, wives, children, relatives and friends, bullying in the workplace, the stress of carrying on a business, feeling stress, depression, or health problems.

As men, it seems no one understands how stressful it is trying to hold it all together, trying to appear as if everything is ok, all the while the boss is having a go at us, the wife needs the house fixed up, the kids need a ride… but what about you? What do you need?

Looking for a therapist or psychologist in the Blue Mountains?

Tradies Who Talk is a psychotherapy practice for men in the Blue Mountains near Sydney. Therapist Nathanael Hunter worked as a tradesman for twenty years, and understands the problems that men have. When he experienced mental health problems, he found enormous help visiting a Blue Mountains psychologist at a local psychology clinic, and eventually decided to become a therapist himself.

Can I really change? Is therapy worth it?

Therapy takes courage and strength to face the things we’d rather ignore. It can be hard work to uncover the things that are causing us trouble, and we have to work to change our unhelpful behaviours. And this is why having a good therapist is powerful. They will assist you as you change, offer you support as you look into the difficult parts of your life, and listen to you as you realise truths you had not seen before.

Therapy is not endless. When you’re living your life in a lighter, happier, more satisfied way, you’ll know that you’re done. Big problems may take between three and six sessions. Compare it to the things we spend money on that don’t improve our lives permanently, like alcohol or drugs, or our big boys toys. Therapy is an investment in your happiness, your relationships with your wife and children, and your ability to live a good life. Learning more about yourself and why you feel the way you do is always worth it.

What is the difference between psychology and psychotherapy?

There are two main differences: the amount of university study that a psychologist must do to call themselves a psychologist (minimum six years), and the Medicare rebates available for psychological treatment. However, the quality of therapy depends on the skill of the practitioner and the relationship developed with the client. Psychotherapists offer the same therapeutic support as psychologists. Nathanael is a highly-skilled psychotherapist with a degree in psychology and neuroscience. He has been practising therapy for decades, and is in training to become a registered psychologist, and eventually open a Blue Mountains psychology clinic.
