Your First Session

What’s your first session going to be like?

It’s big deal to finally approach a therapist. It takes some men months, maybe years, to finally sum up the courage to attend a psychotherapist’s office, and that’s totally normal. It’s tough to face the voices in our heads, and let a stranger know about these things inside us. It’s like we’re admitting defeat if we don’t work it out ourselves. Some of our workmates might shame us for seeing a “quack” or “shrink”, but they’re usually the ones who need the most help!

Plus, therapy is expensive! We don’t know if it will work or not, or if it will be worth it. It sounds risky.

When you first call Tradies Who Talk, you’ll hear an answering machine message. It will ask you to leave a message with your name and number, and then Nathanael will call you back to arrange an appointment on a weekday.

Tradies Who Talk is based in Wentworth Falls, in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. When you arrive, I’ll show you into the studio where we’ll chat. I will ask you to sign a consent form so we can continue. I’ll ask you to pay the fee for the session. Then, we’ll chat for about an hour. I’ll ask you a few questions about your address and what you do for work, and your family situation. At some point I’ll ask about why you’ve chosen to come to therapy today, and we’ll have a conversation. Our time together will be completely confidential and private. No one beyond the two of us will know what we talk about inside.

I won’t offer advice. Therapy is not about advice. No doubt you’ve tried many things over the years to fix the problem that’s bothering you. You’ve heard all the advice. Instead, therapy is a conversation where we’ll work together to find a solution over several sessions.

Sometimes emotions might come up, and this can be scary. You might get angry, or sad, or annoyed, or all three at once. You might feel like crying, which for many men is the scariest part. It was for me! This is all normal, and part of the process of finding solutions and healing our past.We all carry the solutions within ourselves, and therapy is the work of uncovering that solution with the help of a therapist. Hearing ourselves talk, uninterrupted, with someone who really wants to hear what you have to say, is incredibly powerful. I’ll ask questions if they are needed, and you can talk about anything at all you need to talk about

After an hour our time will be up. One session is not usually long enough to get to the nuts and bolts of the problem, so at the end I’ll ask if you’d like to make another appointment. It might be the next week, in two weeks, or in a month, depending on the urgency of the issue.
